All Canadians have to pay tax. The Income Tax Act, RSC 1985, c 1 (5th Supp) establishes a system of progressive taxation in Canada. The Act is probably the lengthiest and most complicated piece of legislation in Canada. It is regularly amended by the federal government to implement new taxation rules. The Act governs all kinds of taxation, from personal taxation, business taxation, tax credits, tax deferrals, and also allows for the creation of certain financial instruments, such as the Tax Free Savings Account and the Registered Retirement Savings Account, among many others.
